The first Rich FAQ we are presenting is the long overdue Mobile Ajax FAQ and was created by Ajit Jaokar, Rocco Georgi and Bryan Rieger. We welcome comments and feedback. AJAX is a browser technology that involves the use of existing Web standards and technologies (XML/XHTML, DOM, CSS, ...
Mobile AJAX is the extension of AJAX principles to the mobile environment, which includes other constrained devices such as gaming consoles or set-top boxes featuring Web browsers. While technologically the same thing, Mobile AJAX is looked at as a special case of AJAX, as it deals wit...
There are two main techniques for cellular data transmission, TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) and CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access). The objective of both techniques is to support multiple simultaneous data channels. TDMA achieves this objective by dividing the radio frequency ...
Mobile devices, by definition, have limitations. These include limited display, limited input capabilities, and the possible absence of a pointing device. Hence structure and navigation become critical in ensuring a good end-user experience. The following design recommendations should ...
In the previous section, we laid out the design considerations for mobile Web applications as recommended by the W3C. Here we'll discuss AJAX-specific considerations.
Having discussed the resurgence of browser-based applications and the significance of AJAX widgets on mobile devices, we'll turn to the design of AJAX applications/widgets.
Until AJAX came along, it wasn't easy to replicate the rich and responsive interaction design of native applications. AJAX is different from other previous attempts to address this problem since it's based on existing non-proprietary standards that are already familiar to developers.
Content owners include players like broadcasters (TV and radio), news agencies, publishers, entertainment companies (movies, music, and entertainment), and rights owner companies (music rights, sports rights, and general showbiz agents). Unlike the Internet, the general perception of t...
Globally, at end of 2005, there were 2.1 billion mobile phones versus a billion Internet users. Among those billion Internet users over 200 million of them accessed the Internet via a mobile phone, mostly in Japan, China, and South Korea. So the sheer number of mobile phones, especiall...
The World Wide Web, as we know it, is exploding. From its fragments emerges a new 'container based' Web based on Widgets. For the lack of a better term, I shall call it a Widget Widget Web. I have long advocated the power of Widgets to transform the Web as we know it. Hence, I am start...
Welcome to the second part of this 3-part article. Much has happened since I wrote the first part: for instance, I am now a member of the Web 2.0 Workgroup and I will be speaking at SYS-CON's SOA Web Services Conference & Expo 2006 in New York City in June. Many thanks for all your fee...
What I am proposing is a mobile phone optimized to accessing information on the Web (which is predominantly, but not necessarily, browsing and so could include Widgets and RSS). Who could do this? Many people but my bets are : Google, Opera, the operators (maybe 3 considering their rec...
Mobile AJAX has a lot of potential. However, many questions still remain about the details of how Mobile AJAX could be implemented and exploited. Ajit Jaokar looks at the problems that occurred in the evolution of Java ME (formerly called J2ME) and how Mobile AJAX and other browser tec...
As you would know from my previous posts, I am a fan of Widgets and I believe in the potential of Widgets (both web and mobile) to transform the web experience as we know it. When I spoke at AJAXWorld, Adam Sah of Google gave a fascinating presentation about Widgets (which Google calls...
Essentially, a smaller screen within the main screen on the desktop can display content originally targeted towards the mobile device, or more importantly, originally created on a mobile device. You can view it as 'widgetizing the mobile Web'. The possibilities for such a product from ...
I see Web 2.0 as the Intelligent web or 'Harnessing Collective Intelligence.' Mobile Web 2.0 extends the principle of 'Harnessing Collective Intelligence' to restricted devices. The seemingly simple idea of extending Web 2.0 to mobile Web 2.0 has many facets, for instance:
The Mobile web 2.0 spotlight is a collection of the best services/products in relation to Mobile Web 2.0, as I see it. In addition, I am also especially keen to highlight products from start-ups / emerging companies in this space. I am happy to receive your recommendations for excellen...
In this session, newly elected Web 2.0 Workgroup member Ajit Jaokar will discuss the wider impact of 'Web 2.0' ?sometimes referred to as the 'Global SOA'?including the use of AJAX especially for mobile applications.
Digital convergence is a much-maligned concept, conjuring up images of the intelligent fridge - a concept most people think they have no need for! But Digital convergence is an idea whose dawn is near, even though there is a lot of confusion about what exactly is meant by digital conve...
In this article, Ajit Jaokar contends that - since his e-mail, calendar and other applications are on the web, and he can store all his documents on the web too, all he needs is a browser. 'One client to rule them all! Thus, today I would use a 'browser-only' PC,' he declares.
Recently, Opera announced the availability of AJAX on mobile devices through their browser. Considering the popularity of Opera in the browser market (especially in the mobile browser market), this announcement is indeed very significant. Having been involved in creating mobile service...
Since I have an interest in Mobile Web 2.0 (and by extension with Web 2.0 in general), I get some interesting reactions from people. Everyone has a view on Web 2.0 - it's almost getting to the stage that we can't discuss religion, politics AND Web 2.0! Anyway, here are two recent incid...

Introducing an intriguing mobile version of a combination of, Ajit Jaokar continues his insightful contributions to the fast-emerging new 'Mobile Web 2.0' category of ideas and applications.
This is a series of three articles - the first (this one) outlining the significance of Web 2.0 technologies, the second article discussing the impact of Web 2.0 technologies on mobility, and the final article on the impact of Web 2.0 technologies on digital convergence. If you are alr...
